Melanie's Facebook Posts - Part 2

OCTOBER 22

OK, so sorry everyone that I haven't been able to keep in touch very well! We love you all so much and miss America a ton!!! But we are doing well and are happy and excited to be doing what the Lord wants us to do and to be able to make a difference in a different part of the world. I have so much to tell all of you,... it's hard to even figure out what to say..

So we are still in Nicoya at the house I told you about, it's tricky living in limited space with two large families but we are learning good lessons and it actually isn't as bad as I can imagine it could be, the Meyers are such great people and so easy to live with, we just love them!!! Thank the Lord he sent us together so we can learn from each other and so we can have each other to buoy each other up. It's been pretty hard the last couple weeks...it is very common for Americans who come here to get diarrhea, headaches, and sore throats and severe ear aches. Well we have had all of the above and it has been very difficult with all these children to keep things going and clean! The kids are pretty much all mended up now, we still have a bit of the diarrhea and stomach aches but they are pretty much all better. Dannan and I are headed to the doctor today for him because he has a very severe sore throat with congestion. He really needs to be able to get back to work so we are just going to get him an antibiotic and help him get back on his feet. I am feeling great, but had my turn with the runs and stomach cramps! So besides the sickness we have been enjoying the great wiles of the jungle and the kids think they are at the zoo everyday. Dannan woke up this morning to the horrendous sound of howler monkeys outside by the house! He said it was pretty loud and he thought maybe the grim reaper was coming to get him!!!~he's pretty sick!~ Also the other morning me and the kids watched about 7 monkeys with babies on their backs climb through the trees right outside the house, it was sooo cute and James was completely freaking out about it! He has been talking about monkeys (he say's donkeys) ever since. We have seen the hugest and most amazing looking spiders ever and the most beautiful butterflies and lizards too! Oh, let me not forget to mention the hoards of ants, of every species and size imaginable! The other day I went down to the garage to get a tote and unload it, when I opened the lid it felt like I was in a horror movie as the millions of ants spilled out from under the lid!!!! I went running, screaming! When I turned around to look back at the house I saw that there were not only ants coming out of the tote but there was a gigantic migration of ants!!! They were heading up the sides of the house and I felt like right into our beds!!! But I got the bug spray out and went to town with it, they almost disappeared about as fast as they came but within a few minutes they were back again trying to make it up to the house. (the house is above the garage so it's quite a ways off the ground! Anyway, we asked the grounds keeper, George, about it and he said that it was nothing to worry about and that we should just let them be! He said they just come in and clean up and then they leave! I felt like telling him I didn't need ants to clean up my house, I could do that myself, but I don't speak Spanish so I couldn't. He said if they get inside and you don't like it then just step on them...well, that was a typical Tico response! So, we have had lots of adventures, way to many to mention, with bugs and spiders and lizards and other things but mostly the kids just think it is all WAY COOL! So besides that, we have been looking for office space and finally found something that will work for the right price so we are going to start building that tomorrow, if we can get Dannan better. We have all the supplies that we need (thanks to two days at the hardware store that is a mile long and completely unorganized in any practical way!) Gotta love the Tico Way! Anyway, we are paying $300 a month for rent plus utilities, not cheaper than the states! But it is brand new and very nice and they are making renovations to make it work well for a lab. So, we will hopefully be in business soon so we can make some money!! We have internet over here at the lab, that's where I am right now, so we can stay in touch better. Also, we will have a mailing address here so I will let you all know what that is when we find out. We would love for any of you who may feel so inclined to mail us peanut butter!!!! A very small jar is $5.00 here!!!! That brings me to my next subject, the cost of living! It is supposedly much cheaper to live here but from everything we can see so far that is a dream! Groceries are at least double the price of Utah and the gas is $4.00 a gallon! Rent is cheaper and so is the price of land but not by much! It is very socialistic and the government seems to have complete control over these peoples lives! It's pretty sad to see and to know that America could be headed to this same situation as well! Let us all pray she does not! Anyway, we know this is what the Lord wants us to be doing and that there is much missionary work to do! We went to Church on Sunday and could see that very clearly! We are trying to learn the language and I feel like I have learned quite a bit already! I know it will come and that the Lord will bless us to be able to speak to his children here! We feel full of the Spirit and are so thankful for all of your prayers in our behalf for we can feel them! Thank You! Thank You!!
We did get a cell phone and we have a number you can call us on, we don't know for sure yet, but we think incoming calls are free, so feel free to call and chat with us!!!! the country code for Costa Rica is 501 and then you dial our number which is: 8808-8761. The cell phone reception at our house is pretty bad so you might not get through but Dannan will have it with him at work and the reception there is good. The Meyers have also got a phone and their number is: 8987-6261.
I do have my vonage phone but I have to have a DSL line for it to work and we don't have one of those yet, even the internet I am on here at the lab is just a signal from the router in the main office here, so I will let you know if I get it hooked up.
I will try and write again soon!! Love you all very much!

OCTOBER 26

After about 1:00 we got a call from a family that is living down here for awhile, the Wrides. They are a mormon family from Utah that have 7 children 10 and under! They invited us to come down to their home and go to the beach! We finished... afternoon chores and headed down and got to spend the afternoon and evening with this family. We went to a very secluded beach close to Tamarindo that was all crushed sea shells and was just beautiful!! The water was a beautiful greenish blue and the waves were very small and fun for the kids. We played for awhile and then headed back to Villavida, where the Wrides live, for dinner and some good conversation! I am here at their house right now writing this post and enjoying the stories the guys are telling. So besides the fact that they have a big, young family they also do Thomas Jefferson Education! Small world! Anyway, we are excited to get to know this family and have some "normalcy" sometimes! They have a beautiful home here and rent for 900 a month, so we are hopeful we can find something similar as well! Tiffanie Wride took pictures all night so she will send them to me and I will be able to post some pics finally! Things are going well and we are happy. Dannan is getting the lab put together but it is slow because everything is a "Tico" problem! Today he spent hours just trying to get the plumbing parts that he purchased at the hardware store to work and not leak! everything is made so cheaply down here it makes it hard to get things done and done right! But we feel confident that we will be able to make money soon and get back on our feet. It has been hard but good and I feel thankful for all the little "blessings." Today has been a little blessing. We have had many good things come along regularly to lighten our Spirits and brings us little bits of beauty and joy! It is truly a beautiful place here, almost so much so that it doesn't seem real! We are enjoying getting to see and know a whole new world!! ~oh, btw~ the country code for CR is 506 not 501, sorry about that on my previous post! Love you all!!
